What Doula Insurance Actually Covers (and What It Doesn't)

A birth worker works at a kitchen table while two kids eat breakfast, an insurance overview video open on the laptop screen.

If you're running a birth work business, whether that's birth support, postpartum work, or full spectrum care, insurance is one of those things that's easy to put off until you actually need it. By then it's too late.

I had about 20 questions about doula insurance sitting in my head for a while: what's actually covered, what isn't, whether coverage follows you across state lines, what happens if a client's family member gets hurt, not just the birthing person, are home births covered. So I sent the whole list to AB. They put together an overview video walking through how coverage works for birth workers, and then sat down with our BirthPro group for a live Q&A to go deeper on the specifics.

Both are below. If you're building or growing your practice, it's worth the watch time.

Intro to the AB Ecosystem for Doulas

Q&A with the BirthPro Doula Group (Recorded 7/20/26)

Every question we asked

Here's the full list of questions we sent AB ahead of time. Some get answered in the overview, some in the Q&A, and a few get covered in both from different angles. Use this as a reference and jump to the video for the parts that apply to you.

Coverage basics

  • What does doula liability insurance actually cover vs. what it doesn't?

  • What are the most common reasons doula insurance is actually utilized or claimed?

  • Does my insurance cover me if I'm working as a volunteer doula?

  • Am I covered during the full spectrum of services: birth, postpartum, full spectrum including loss?

  • Does my coverage follow me across state lines?

  • Is there a difference in coverage between independent doulas and those working under an agency?

  • Are different things covered by homeowners insurance vs. doula liability insurance? Is there overlap?

  • Why would I need cyber coverage?

Scope of practice

  • If a doula is with a laboring person at home before they go to the hospital or the midwife arrives, what is their liability?

  • Where are the stipulations and situations covered for postpartum doulas working in a client's home detailed?

  • If I offer additional services like placenta encapsulation, lactation support, or EFT, are those covered under the same policy or do I need riders?

  • What happens if I'm asked to do something outside my scope and I decline? Am I still liable if something goes wrong?

  • Am I covered if I give advice virtually or via text between visits?

Incidents and claims

  • What should I do immediately if something goes wrong at a birth?

  • How do I document my work to protect myself if a claim is ever filed?

  • Does a claim affect my future premiums?

  • What's the difference between occurrence and claims-made policies?

Business specifics

  • Should I have clients sign a contract, and does the insurance require it?

  • Am I covered if a client's baby or family member is injured, not just the birthing person?

  • What's the process for actually filing a claim?

Insurance isn't the most exciting part of building a birth work business, but it's part of what makes the rest of it possible. Watch both videos, use the question list to find what applies to your situation, and reach out to AB directly if you want to talk through your own coverage.

One more thing: AB offered BirthPro doulas a discount on coverage. If you need the code, reach out to me directly.
