Babywearing Basics: How Postpartum Doulas Help Parents Find Their Rhythm

Babywearing offers parents comfort, connection, and hands-free support — skills postpartum doulas often teach in the early weeks.

Bringing a new baby home is joyful — and sometimes overwhelming. Parents often find themselves wishing they had an extra set of hands, especially in those early weeks. That’s where babywearing can make a world of difference.

As a postpartum doula, you’re not just supporting recovery and household flow — you’re teaching parents the everyday skills that help them feel capable and confident. Babywearing is one of the most practical (and empowering) tools you can share.

Why Babywearing Matters

  • Bonding: Skin-to-skin contact and closeness foster attachment and emotional regulation.

  • Soothing: The gentle motion and heartbeat rhythm calm fussy babies.

  • Hands-Free: Parents can move, eat, or care for older children while keeping baby close.

  • Feeding Support: Some carriers allow for discreet chest/breastfeeding on the go.

Common Types of Baby Carriers

As a postpartum doula, you don’t need to be an expert in every brand — but knowing the basics helps you guide families.

  • Wraps – Long pieces of fabric tied snugly, ideal for newborn closeness.

  • Ring Slings – Adjustable with rings; easy for quick ups and downs.

  • Soft Structured Carriers – Buckle carriers that offer ergonomic support and are easy for partners to use.

  • Meh Dais / Hybrids – Combine the support of a structured carrier with wrap-like ties.

Safety First: The T.I.C.K.S. Rule

When teaching babywearing, doulas emphasize safety. The T.I.C.K.S. checklist is an easy reminder:

  • Tight

  • In view at all times

  • Close enough to kiss

  • Keep chin off chest

  • Supported back

The Doula’s Role

Parents often get overwhelmed by too many choices, or discouraged if their first try feels awkward. As a postpartum doula, you:

  • Demonstrate safe techniques with different carriers.

  • Reassure parents that there’s no one “right” way — it’s about what feels comfortable and secure.

  • Troubleshoot fit issues to keep both parent and baby safe and supported.

  • Empower caregivers with confidence to use babywearing in daily life.
