Frequently Asked Questions
Can’t I just educate myself online using Google or YouTube? There is an overwhelming amount of pregnancy and birth information online—and unfortunately, not all of it is accurate or evidence-based. The full Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class curates high-quality, up-to-date research for you and places it into real-life context. Even more importantly, you’re not learning alone. You have access to an experienced instructor who can help you interpret the evidence, answer questions, and support you as you prepare for birth—something Google simply can’t offer.
Shouldn’t I just let doctors and nurses tell me what to do? Many routine practices in maternity care have not kept pace with current research, and families often feel pressure to consent without fully understanding their options. In this class, you and your support person(s) learn how to communicate respectfully, ask informed questions, and advocate for care that aligns with your values and your needs. These skills support not only your birth experience, but your confidence navigating healthcare throughout your life.
My friends told me childbirth classes are a waste of time. It’s true—there are some low-quality classes out there, and they’ve given childbirth education a bad reputation. The Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class was developed by Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN, a former professor who specializes in making research engaging, accessible, and meaningful. The result is a class that is interactive, empowering, and grounded in real evidence—without fear-based teaching or fluff.
What will I learn in this class that will actually help me during labor? Families consistently tell us they value the practical, hands-on tools they gain. You’ll learn a wide range of comfort measures for labor, including: Movement and upright birthing positions Massage and hands-on support Water immersion Acupressure Breathing techniques, music, and relaxation tools You’ll also participate in a Comfort Measures Rehearsal, helping you and your support team feel prepared and confident when labor begins.
What makes the Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class different? This class does not shy away from the real issues affecting birth today. We openly discuss how systems of care are influenced by power, bias, and inequity—including the impacts of patriarchy, institutional racism, and lack of inclusivity. Together, we explore evidence-based strategies and practical solutions that support autonomy, dignity, and informed decision-making in birth.
How does instructor mentorship work in the full childbirth class? In the full Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class, your instructor provides ongoing guidance alongside the course content. You’ll receive access to the Evidence Based Birth® Parent’s Site, which includes: Expert-led video lessons An extensive PDF research library Live Zoom sessions with your instructor and class community Your instructor facilitates discussion, answers questions, and helps connect the evidence to your real-life birth plans. Live components and mentorship are specific to the full childbirth class and are not included in shorter EBB offerings.
Important note about class formats BirthPro offers multiple Evidence Based Birth® class options, including shorter workshops and focused sessions. Access to the Evidence Based Birth® Parent’s Site, full video library, and live instructor mentorship is included only in the full Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class.
